Driven pheasants on our family friendly shoot
Our pheasant shoot
Henley Hall’s friendly family shoot is situated in South Shropshire, just two and a half miles east of the picturesque market town of Ludlow.
This private pheasant shoot – established for over one hundred years - is spread over 1,500 acres of Henley’s mixed topography set against the backdrop of Henley Hall’s Grade 2* listed building.
Our varied landscape includes parkland, rivers, streams, hedges, open fields, orchards and woodland as well as access to nearby Caynham’s Bronze-age site. Since 2010 we have been members of the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme to promote wildlife.
Your host, Charles Lumsden, works with our experienced keeper to provide well-sited game crops, small coverts and natural orchards.
Your host
Charles Lumsden is a keen huntsman and shot. Since taking over the running of Henley in 2008, Charles has devoted himself to enhancing Henley Hall’s shoot. He has planted new woodland areas, and introduced an outcrossing breeding programme.
Charles takes an interest in all aspects of the shoot and works closely with his gamekeeper to prepare and select the best drives for your day. He – and his enthusiastic labrador Anna – will be present throughout.
Let days
We offer both formal and informal days. Instructors are available. We cater for a maximum of eight guns. Our shooting days are usually held on a Monday, with some Saturdays by arrangement. This season’s dates are listed on www.gunsonpegs.com
Cost
A day of formal driven shooting is usually for 150 birds at £30 a bird. This includes all refreshments. We do not charge VAT. We also offer informal driven shooting at £27 a bird, usually 100-150 bird days.
Our rates reflect the fact that we are a private, not a commercial, shoot. As a family shoot, the quality of your day is important to us. There is no rush to make up your quota and we encourage the shooting of sporting birds.
Your day
Formal driven shoot
On arrival around 9.15 your hosts Charles and Susanne Lumsden welcome you with coffee and bacon rolls, before you set off at 9.30.
We have four drives before lunch, with a break for locally-produced damson gin and/or soup between drives if shooting through.
After a restorative gin and tonic in the library of the main Hall, we move to the formal dining room – with its view on to the Park - for lunch. Margaret’s homemade steak & kidney pudding followed by treacle pudding and cheese is renowned throughout Shropshire, though not for its slimming properties! Our cook’s recipes are a closely guarded secret.
We serve the traditional cider and/or beer with lunch, followed by port. However, we are happy for you to provide your own wine, with no corkage charge.
Your typical timetable would be as follows:
- 9.15: coffee and bacon rolls; gamekeeper’s briefing and drawing of pegs
- 9.30: four drives, with a break for locally-produced damson gin and/or soup
- 12.45-1.00: pre-lunch drinks
- 1.00: lunch
- 2.15: two further drives (one only in December due to the failing light)
- 4.15: tea, homemade cakes and crumpets
After Tea, our gamekeeper will join us to confirm the total bag and hand out shooting cards. Then of course there is the gamekeeper’s tip.
We welcome wives and partners, either for the whole day or for lunch. For those new to the area, we are happy to suggest visitor attractions in Ludlow and the surrounding villages or just soak up the atmosphere of Ludlow’s historic town centre.
Ludlow has a wide range of high-quality hotels and guesthouses, suitable for all budgets.
We welcome well-behaved dogs.
Informal driven shoot
We follow the same pattern except with lunch and refreshments taken in our gamekeeper & beaters’ cosy quarters.
Other services
We are happy to arrange vehicle rental and photographs. If you have any other requirements just let us know.
